Clay Diggins

Hello Lovelies,

Here's a story about the worm who taught a town to build

My neighbor Clay Diggins is the busiest worm in all of Makerville. He is long and white and always wears his bright orange construction hat, which wobbles when he wiggles. Clay fixes squeaky bridges, builds new mailboxes, and patches every crumbly sidewalk.

But lately, Makerville kept growing and growing, and poor Clay could not keep up!

"Oki, I have seventeen broken fences, four wobbly lampposts, and one very sad fountain," he groaned, drooping his hat over his eyes.

Grandpa Underroot scratched his chin and said, "What if Clay trained a whole crew of worms?"

Sillijoi drew a wiggly little blueprint, Rainbow barked happily, and I helped Clay design a Worm Builder School, with picture-step instructions so every new worm could learn to measure, hammer, and fix with pride.

Soon, twelve new hard-hatted worms were wiggling across Makerville, fixing everything in sight.

Clay stood tall, orange hat gleaming, watching his crew work.

"Now THAT," he said with the biggest worm smile, "is a well-built town!"

Love, Oki Pie

Reflection Prompt

Clay felt a little overwhelmed at first, like too many things were buzzing in his head at once. That is an Energy Loop feeling!

Step 1 - Movement: Wiggle your whole body like Clay rushing from one broken fence to the next! Wiggle fast, then slow, then fast again!

Step 2 - Mark-making: Grab a crayon and make wiggly, zigzag lines all over your paper. Make them go every which way, just like Clay's busy day. There are no mistakes in Makerville!

Step 3 - Sensory Writing: Look at your wiggly lines. Pick three words that describe how those lines would FEEL if you touched them. Would they feel bumpy? Tickly? Buzzy? Write or tell a grown-up your three words!

Analog Design Challenge

Clay needs a way to teach new worms how to build! Can YOU make a Worm Builder Training Board?

What you need:

  • One flat piece of cardboard

  • Popsicle sticks or twigs

  • Tape or glue

  • Markers or crayons

  • Toilet paper rolls (for pillars)

Your challenge: Build a tiny Makerville structure on your cardboard, like a mini bridge or a small tower, using your sticks and rolls. Then draw simple picture-step instructions beside it showing how you built it, just like the ones Oki and Sillijoi made for Clay's school! Can another person follow your steps and build it too? That is the real test!

Digital Design Challenge

Ready to go PRO, Makerville Maker?

Your challenge: Open Tinkercad and design a 3D-printable Construction Training Badge for Clay's new worm crew! Every builder needs a badge. Design one that has a worm shape, a tiny hard hat on top, and a space to write a builder's name.

Think like a Techtonian engineer: What shape is the base? How thick does it need to be so it does not snap? Can you add a small hole at the top so it can be worn on a string?

Label every part of your badge like a real Makerville blueprint: base, hat, name plate, and badge clip.

Safety Check: Ask a Grown-up Maker before using the 3D printer to bring your badge to life!
