In 2025, Oki Pie had her first art show in Campbell, California.

The art show featured 100 character illustrations from the world of Oki Pie, a handful of 3d printed toys based on these characters, an interactive AI app to help visitors connect with the backstory of each character, and several art activities to enjoy together! The broader goal of this first art show was to introduce the characters in Oki’s universe in 5 categories: family, friends, teachers, neighbors, and special characters.

Designed for

shared engagement

& dual empathy

When people came to the art show, they were given a QR code to access an app designed on Playlab (featured in the video) which asked them to share the name of their favorite character on display. In response, the app gave them the backstory of the character, along with a reflection prompt to discuss with other visitors. There were also large activity tables (and a small child sized activity table just for kids!) where people had the opportunity to be creative - coloring sheets, paper toys, painting Oki wooden tokens, open-ended paint-your-own wooden ornaments, and story-writing worksheets. This made the art show special - it wasn’t just designed to walk around and observe the art. It was designed for shared engagement and expressive arts - holding space for visitors to empathize with the characters, and by way of this act, empathize with their own lived experiences. In media psychology this phenomenon is termed Dual Empathy - when we feel something for a character, and ourselves simultaneously.

Gratitude!
